What is GHB?
GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is a central nervous system depressant known for its euphoric and sedative effects. Originally developed as an anesthetic, it has become popular as a recreational drug and in bodybuilding circles.
Effects of GHB:
Recreational Use: Induces relaxation, euphoria, increased sociability, and reduced inhibitions. It can also cause drowsiness and sedation, leading to its misuse as a “date rape drug.”
Therapeutic Use: Under medical supervision, GHB is used to treat narcolepsy and cataplexy, manage alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and promote deep sleep.
Risks of GHB:
Overdose: Can lead to respiratory depression, coma, and death, especially when combined with alcohol or opioids.
Addiction: Regular use can result in dependence and withdrawal symptoms.
Memory Loss: High doses may cause blackouts and memory loss.
Health Effects: Long-term use can damage the liver, respiratory system, and nervous system.
Legal Consequences: Possession and use are illegal due to the high risk of abuse.
Warning: GHB is potent with a narrow margin between a safe and dangerous dose. It should only be used under medical supervision. Misuse can have serious, life-threatening consequences. Seek help if struggling with substance abuse involving GHB.
